Mind Hacking, Loss of Privacy and Autonomy

As BCI (brain-computer interface — a device that reads electrical signals from the brain, or writes them back in) technology leapt from lab prototypes to human trials in the 2020s, ethicists, clinicians and neuroscientists warned of profound moral risks. The field is not Elon Musk's alone. Synchron, a competitor whose device is threaded into a blood vessel near the motor cortex rather than implanted directly in the brain, received an FDA investigational device exemption (a permit to run clinical trials) in July 2021 and implanted its first US patient in July 2022, ahead of Neuralink. Musk's Neuralink, granted FDA approval for its PRIME study in May 2023, implanted its first human patient (Noland Arbaugh, a quadriplegic 29-year-old) on 28 January 2024. A May 2024 incident in which most of Arbaugh's electrode threads detached from his brain tissue prompted algorithm and surgical revisions, and the departure of co-founder Benjamin Rapoport over safety concerns. By late 2025 more than a dozen people had received Neuralink or Synchron implants.

Neuroethicists warn that BCIs could expose or alter thoughts. A team led by Rafael Yuste, a Columbia University neuroscientist who founded the NeuroRights Foundation, has proposed a new slate of "neurorights": protections for mental privacy, personal identity, free will, fair access and protection from algorithmic bias, to sit alongside existing human rights. In 2021, Chile amended its constitution to protect mental integrity and neurodata, becoming the first country to enshrine such a provision. The debate is no longer hypothetical. With BCIs in real patients and Neuralink targeting its Blindsight device for restoring vision, alongside speech-restoration trials, for 2026, the ethical questions are now concrete, and the long-standing assumption that the skull is the last bastion of private thought is being stress-tested in real time.
